I hate mornings, and the worst part is I’m an early riser. Weekend mornings I’m like Mary Poppins, ready to take on the world, handing out spoon fulls of sugar while singing… but during the week it’s a whole different story. When I began my new job in January, my new hours were 9-5, and my commute shortened by 40 minutes (it’s now 2 minutes and its heaven). It felt like I had so much time to kill in the mornings, I can only take Al Roker or Sports Center for so long until I go crazy, so I needed something to do in the mornings.
As Elle Woods once said, “Exercise gives you endorphins. Endorphins make you happy”. I started to work out in the morning, and take some time for me, and Elle was right… It even turned into more productivity at work. So here’s a look at a typical week-day morning for me.
Typically, my morning starts with a loud alarm clock going off at 5:45am that scares not only me but my cat. I slowly get up, put on some work out clothes, throw my hair in what may look like a pony tale, inhale a Lara Bar (Coconut Chocolate Chip is my favorite) and leave the house for the gym. I spend about an hour or so there, sweating my tits off and trying not to make eye contact with anyone – I’m not really a “people-person” that early in the morning.
By the time I’m showered and ready to make breakfast, I want something that’s quick and easy – that doesn’t require a lot of thinking. My favorite go-to breakfast is my Green Breakfast Smoothie. I’ve read a lot of different recipes for green smoothies and spent way too much money in fancy juice bars to finally come up with my own.
At first I was throwing all the ingredients into the blender, and it wasn’t coming out thick… I couldn’t figure out why, until one day a girlfriend of mine recommended putting in an avocado. I thought she was crazy, but I figured ah what the hell. I put in a half of one and omg the smoothie became everything I ever dreamed about… smooth and thick. It doesn’t even affect the taste of the smoothie (you barely taste it in there), plus its always good to put some healthy fats in every meal.
I like this one because it starts my day with a lot of greens and some essential sugars and fats. I hope you like it too!
Let me know your thoughts, or how you begin your morning.
Green Breakfast Smoothie
1 Green Apple
1 cup of Kale
1 cup of Almond Milk (sometimes I will also Coconut Water for a sweeter taste)
½ Avocado (More avocado the thicker the smoothie will be)
- Place all ingredients in a blender, and blend until its at a consistency that you want.
- Serve immediately
Sometimes after a hard workout, I will add some protein powder to the smoothie. I use a scoop of Vega One Nutritional Shake French Vanilla. It’s a plant-based protein blend with 20grams of Protein, 6 servings of vegetables, 25% daily value of fiber, probiotics, and more.
