May Birchbox

Instead of the normal recipe post today, I wanted to mix it up and tell you something that I’m really excited about!

For my birthday, my best friend gifted me with a subscription to Birchbox. And now during the first week of each month, I race home to check my mailbox to see when the box has arrived! I’m like a kid at Christmas, every month.

What is Birchbox? Birchbox is a high-end beauty sample subscription service. The samples range from cosmetics, to nail polish, to bath and body. After you sample them, you can purchase the full size products on their website too.

At first I was skeptical about it, I have really sensitive skin and nearly allergic to everything. When I was younger I had a bad case of eczema, and as I got older its gotten much better, however my skin allergies have greatly increased. If I use a new body wash or lotion with fragrance, I instantly break out with rashes and hives… needless to say I don’t try new beauty products often.

Luckily, Birchbox allows you to complete a profile which asks you about skin allergies, hair types, and more – essentially everything they need to know about you! Once my first box came, and it was completely organic ingredients (fragrance and paraben free), I knew I was in heaven.

What do you receive in your box? Generally, each month I received 4-5 samples and 1-2 bonus items. Your samples are typically randomized based on your profile, but they do allow you to pick your bonus item.

This month, here is what I received:

Beauty Protector Protect & Detangler – Paraban and sulfrate free, this detangler smooth hair and moisturizes like a leave in conditioner. I have a LOT of fine hair (I’m constantly shedding), but typically I don’t use products like these because they weigh my hair down – not this one. This one left my hair smelling great and super soft. I’ll definitely be purchasing this!

Kopari Coconut Crush Scrub– Silicon, sulfate, and paraben free, this scrub is made from coconut and brown sugar to exfoliate and smooth your face. When I used it, it left my face felling great – clean and fresh – however the smell was really sweet. I think it works great, I just can’t get over the smell.

COOLA Classic Face Sport SPF 50
– Let’s start by saying this is the first time I’ve used SFP 50 since I was probably 5. However, yesterday when I went for a run outside, I put this on my face and I was amazed. It was super light, and didn’t leave a gross greasy fell on my face. I’ll definitely be using this for the summer when I’m working outside on the lawn (that is if the damn birds ever stop eating the lawn seed!)

Cargo Blush and Bronzer Duo– This came in the same package, and the colors looked great when I opened it – and then I put it on. I have pale irish skin –until my Italian side kicks in during the summer – but right now I could blend into the wall. I put it on and it was too bright and dark for my skin tone right now. I’m going to give it the benefit of the doubt and say it would look great with a tan.

And my absolute favorite:

Amika Bombshell Blow Out Spray
– THIS IS AMAZING! Like I said before, I have fine hair, and with that there’s not a lot of volume. This didn’t way it down and gave me so much texture! I already purchased a larger size!
